2017 Michigan Wine Competition and Winery Visits, Part l
Michigan hits a Grand Slam on 2016 White WinesJudging the Michigan Wine Competition is always enlightening, this year being no exception! A total of 380 wines were evaluated, and judges were excited about the quality of wines entered this year. Of particular note was the significant number of Gold Medal white wines (51) sent to the Sweepstakes rounds. My ensuing trek to the Leelanau Peninsula and Old Mission Peninsula reinforced what was suggested at the competition; 2016 was indeed one impressive vintage in this cool climate wine region. The sparkling and white wines noted are among the judges favorites at the competition, and wines I tasted while visiting these two picturesque AVAs after the competition concluded. Gold and higher award notations are included for those wines entered in this year’s Michigan Wine Competition.Sparkling WinesMawby NV Grace Brut Rosé; Leelanau Peninsula: Produced in the traditional method, this dazzling bubble is a blend of 98% Pinot Noir and 2% Regent (a dark-skinned hybrid grape).
